Tini Kerala is located in the southwestern tip of India, but its culture differs considerably from those of India subcontinent. Keralan culture drived from ancient tribes of the region, Hinduism in Kerala appears as a generic term with a variety of ancient rituals. The innumerable temple festivals encompassing numerous art forms and attracting huge crowds of devotes, and are enriched with music, performing, elephant processions, special pujas (forms of worship) etc. The major event in the festival series is the annual temple festival Thripunithura, some of the recordings featured on this disc were made in front of the performing artists, in the midst of a cheering crowd. The diversity of Kerala music styles can best be described in terms of a continuum ranging from pure improvisation to pure composition. The drums used in the styles featured here are chenda (Chempata Melam, Kuzhal Pattu), thimila (Panchavadyam), edaykka (Panchavadyam), and maddalam (Panchavadyam and Maddalam Keli). The wind instruments are kuzhal (kuzhal Pattu, Chempata Melam) and kombu (Chempata Melam and Panchavadyam). The cymbals ilathalam also appers in all tracks. All recordings were made by Rolf Killius (1995-96).
